Direct Access Barristers (also called Public Access Barristers) are barristers in England and Wales who are specially qualified to take instructions directly from members of the public, businesses, or organisations, without needing a solicitor first.
Here’s what they can do for you:

✅ What Direct Access Barristers Can Do

Give legal advice: Provide expert legal opinions on your case, rights, or options.
Draft legal documents: Prepare pleadings, skeleton arguments, contracts, or letters before action.

Represent you in court or tribunal: Appear as your advocate in hearings, trials, appeals, and arbitrations.

Advise on evidence and procedure: Guide you on what evidence you need, how to present it, and how the legal process works.

Negotiate on your behalf: Help resolve disputes by negotiating settlements directly with the other side.

Work in specialist areas: Many barristers focus on areas like crime, family law, employment, commercial disputes, property, immigration, etc.

⚖️ What They Generally Cannot Do
Conduct litigation (unless specially authorised): Most barristers cannot file documents at court, manage case correspondence, or hold client money. (Some have “litigation extensions” that allow them to handle these tasks—so it depends on the barrister.)

Act as your solicitor: For example, they usually won’t handle day-to-day case management or chase paperwork from the other side.

Hold client funds: They can’t take money to pay for things like court fees or expert reports—you’ll usually need to pay those directly.
When They’re Useful

If you need specialist legal advice without paying for a full solicitor team.
If you’re representing yourself in court but want a professional advocate for the hearing.
For cost-effective legal support, since you only pay for what you need.
